Oral and maxillofacial surgeon

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform surgery to correct a gamut of diseases, injuries and other defects in the head, neck, face, and jaws. The surgeon mostly corrects any defects in the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.

To become a surgeon you require a minimum length of formation, which is five years for a basic medical training and another four years for a basic medical and dental training pertaining to the oral and maxillofacial regions. This requirement is stipulated by the European Union. In the USA and Canada, Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are one among the nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association and the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are provided training for treatments such as the extraction of wisdom teeth, misaligned jaws , tumors and cysts of the mouth and jaw and also to perform dental implant surgery . They are in addition, provided training to administer anesthesia. This special has wider scope and it is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions.
