Craniofacial Surgery

Craniofacial surgery is a division of plastic surgery. It is concerned with the congenital and acquired deformities of the skull, face and jaws. It involves the surgery of bone, skin, muscle and teeth. It also includes reconstructive treatment of disorders of the soft and hard tissues of the face and cranial areas.

Craniofacial surgeons treat defects like craniosynostosis, rare craniofacial clefts, acute and chronic sequellae of facial fractures, cleft lip and palate, micrognathia , Treacher Collins Syndrome, Apert's Syndrome, Crouzon's Syndrome, hemifacial microsomia and many more . It is said that the majority of the patients with craniofacial abnormalities are children.

Craniofacial surgeons are given one year training in craniofacial surgery after completing plastic surgery training. The training includes in-depth study of the soft and hard tissues of the cranial areas. Paul Tessier is regarded as the father of craniofacial surgery. He is a French surgeon who has presented several papers in this discipline.
