Craniofacial reconstruction

Craniofacial reconstruction surgery refers to a sub set of plastic surgery which deals with reconstruction of the facial features due to congenital and acquired deformities of the skull, face and jaws. But craniofacial surgery includes manipulation of bone. It is not tissue specific.

Craniofacial surgeons deal with bones, skin, teeth, muscle etc…It does not include the surgery of brain or eye. The father of craniofacial surgery is Paul Tessier, a French surgeon. He attempted to correct several disorders and been successful in correcting disorders involving the orbits at an ophthalmology conference in Rome in1 967.

The education program of the craniofacial surgery spans for one year. Admission to this surgical education programs is open ot those who have completed an accredited plastic surgery residency program or other equalent programs. Craniofacial surgeons later spend a year's training in this discipline after their completion of plastic surgery training. Some other defects treated by these surgeons include craniosynostosis (isolated and syndromic), acute and chronic sequellae of facial fractures, rare craniofacial clefts and much more.
