Cosmetic dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry refers to a discipline within dentistry which focuses on the modification of the appearance of a patient's oral cavity and its surrounding structures. This is done for the prevention and treatment of organic, structural or functional oral disease. It is possible to alter the appearance of the mouth to make the patient more visually appealing.
Of late, dental materials are made of porcelain or composite materials that are closer to the appearance of the natural tooth structure. They are also attached to the underlying tooth structure with resin adhesives. On the other hand in the past, they were made of gold, amalgam and many other metals.
Several procedure of cosmetic dentistry involves whitening or tooth bleaching, enamel shaping, bonding and veneers. Out of these procedures, the most common cosmetic dental procedure is tooth bleaching or whitening. Though many other options are available for tooth bleaching, this is popular because it is a dentist supervised treatment.
