  • The actual process of rhinoplasty surgery:

    • The skin of the nose is peeled back from the framework of bone and cartilage
    • The framework of bone and cartilage is reshaped, depending on the problem and the surgeon’s technique.
    • After the reshaping, the skin is draped over the new framework.

    • When the surgery is over, a splint is positioned to help the nose keep its new shape. Nasal packs help to support the septum, the tissue that divides the two air passages.
    • This surgery can be done from within the nose or from outside, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • The patient should be in bed, with the head in an elevated position for the first day. There will be pain and discomfort that can be relieved by a sedative. Care must be taken not to blow the nose for a couple of weeks.
  • A little bleeding might take place in the first few days, and there will be swelling and bruising around the eyes that will take a couple of weeks to disappear. Cold compresses will help to give comfort. After a few days the nasal packing will be removed. By the end of two weeks all bandages, splints, and stitches will be removed.
  • Care must be taken over the first three weeks not to get involved in strenuous activity or exercise that will heighten blood pressure. Patients who wear glasses should not rest them on the bridge of the nose; they should be taped on to the forehead or the cheeks.
  • The first eight weeks is a crucial period of time where the nose should not be handled unnecessarily. The surgeon will require checking on the healing process through a series of follow-up visits.
