What is laser skin resurfing?
What is the Procedure?
What is the cost?
Laser wrinkle removal is just one of the methods used to resurface
skin. Chemical peels and derma abrasion are two other methods commonly
used. Resurfacing methods remove layers of skin, revealing a healthier
looking skin underneath. Laser skin resurfacing can be used to treat
different skin problems, but it is most commonly used as a laser wrinkle
reducer.
Laser treatments for wrinkles and freckles use a laser beam, which
is an intense beam of light. Laser beams heats and eliminates surface
skin tissue, removing wrinkles and freckles. As laser beams are
very precise, the surrounding skin is not affected. Laser therapy
for wrinkles can erase fine lines and wrinkles, smooth and tighten
eyelid skin, improve the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes,
soften pucker marks and frown lines, remove brown spots and improve
the appearance of scars.
The Procedure
Laser treatment for facial wrinkles is performed by a qualified plastic
surgeon. It is usually conducted in the plastic surgeon’s office.
Patients are given either topical anesthetic, local anesthesia or
intravenous sedation. During the procedure, the laser beam is passed
over the skin. The top skin layer is removed by laser, until it has
reached a point where wrinkles, scars and freckles will be less visible.
The two lasers most commonly used in wrinkle removal are carbon
dioxide and erbium. Carbon dioxide seems to be more effective in
treating deep wrinkles, but it has a longer recovery time and has
more chances of leading to an adverse reaction. Some plastic surgeons
will use a carbon dioxide laser for deep wrinkles and an erbium
laser for fine lines and smaller wrinkles.
There is minor discomfort through the surgery and as the patient
is recovering. The procedure usually takes between ten minutes and
two hours, depending on how large an area is being treated.
The average cost of laser skin resurfacing is around $2,500 for
the plastic surgeon’s fee. To that is added the cost of the
facility, anesthesia, pre-operative care, post-operative care, creams
and post-surgery medication.
After the surgery, the areas that have been treated need to be
kept moist. They may be treated with ointment or covered with surgical
bandages. There will be some swelling and redness after the surgery,
which will fade within a few weeks. Within a week after the surgery,
the skin will become dry and start to peel. Crusts may form on the
skin, which can last up to ten days. There may be redness for a
few weeks or more. After surgery, patients need to keep their skin
hydrated and protected from the sun.
