The American Board of Plastic Surgery [ABPS] is a medical organization in the U.S. certifying plastic surgeons and their practice. ABPS is one of the 24 specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The idea to establish this Board took root in the late 1930’s and in 1941, the ABPS came under the oversight of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
What Is Its History?
Although oriental countries have records of plastic surgeries in Dr. John Peter Mettauer did their history, in America, the history of plastic surgery in US in 1827. He corrected a cleft palate defect with surgical instruments that he had created. This was the first incident of plastic surgery in the modern world.

In the later decades of the 1800’s, as tensions and conflicts erupted and finally climaxed in the World Wars in early twentieth century, opportunities to test out this new area in medical surgery came up as wounded soldiers were brought in. Surgeons experimented and perfected their knowledge and skills in plastic surgery, working on these mutilated bodies.

Yet, in spite of the rapid development in the field of plastic surgery, doctors and surgeons were very much on their own. There was no coordinating body that could bring these specialists onto one platform where they could share knowledge and new ideas. The American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons [ASPRS] (it became the American Society of Plastic Surgeons [ASPS] in 1999), was the first organization that gave structure and direction to the pioneering efforts of the early plastic surgeons. Jacques Maliniac and Gustave Aufricht were two immigrant doctors who worked to establish this Board.

Nevertheless, plastic surgery was still not being recognized by the American Board of Surgeons which was the medical certifying organization at that time. So doctors representing the ASPS met with the American Board of Surgeons and succeeded in getting the Plastic Surgery in America established in the late 1930’s. This newly- established Board came under the supervision of the American Board of Medical Specialties in 1941. With Board certification, plastic surgery in America became a legitimate part of the medical establishment by 1950.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery has established plastic surgery as a medical science and has built public awareness and government recognition of this branch of healing.
