Possible problems arising due to Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery is very often used to correct the problem of drooping
eyelids. Droopy eyelids can occur on the upper or lower eyelids. Droopy
upper eyelids occur because of sagging eyelid skin. They can impair
vision. Droopy lower eyelids are puffy and bags develop underneath
because of too much fat cell underneath the eyes. Droopy eyelids make
a person look older and tired. An eyelid lift can help to correct
all these problems.
What Conditions Are Cured?
Eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty) removes excess fat from
the upper eyelids and lower eyelids. It can correct drooping eyelids
and puffy bags underneath the eyes. It will not remove wrinkles or
dark circles.
Surgical Procedures
There are different types of eyelid plastic surgery. Before undergoing
any surgery, you will need to speak to a plastic surgery about the
problems you want corrected and the appropriate treatment to correct
those problems. Here are some types of cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Upper eyelid lift surgery. Incisions are made along creases
in the eyelids. Excess fat, muscles and loose skin are removed.
Lower eyelid lift surgery. An incision is made below the
eyelid. Skin, fat and muscle are removed.
Transconjunctival blepharoplasty eye lift. When eyelid
bags are caused solely by excess fat, an incision may be made inside
the eyelid. Excess fat is either removed or repositioned. A lower
eyelid incision may be accompanied by resurfacing.
Canthoplasty is surgery that tightens the lower eyelids.
Brow lift. A brow lift also improves the appearance of
the eye area. Small incisions are made above the hairline.
To treat the cheek area, underneath the eyes, a facelift
may be needed. The skin is resuspended and tightened.
Eye wrinkles can be treated with resurfacing surgery. Eyebrow
furrows can be treated with Botox.
Laser eyelid surgery is another type of surgery that makes
changes to the eyelids. Like cosmetic eyelid surgery, small incisions
are made on the eyelids. Only with laser surgery, the incisions
are made with lasers. Excess fat is removed.
The Procedure For Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery needs to be performed by a plastic surgeon, usually
in the plastic surgeon’s office. It may also be performed in
a hospital. It will involve small incisions on or near the eyelids
being treated. Excess fat, skin and muscle is removed. The incisions
are closed with sutures. The surgery is carried around under local
anesthesia. There may be some discomfort. The procedure takes between
one to three hours.
After the surgery, the eyes may be lubricated with ointment. A
bandage may be needed. The eyelids will be sore as the anesthesia
wears off. The patient will need to keep their head elevated for
a few days. Cold compresses may be used to treat swelling and bruising.
The stitches will be removed within a week after surgery.
