Ear Surgery - Better Appearance or Better Hearing?

Cosmetic ear surgery is a controversial type of surgery. Some people have ear surgeries to improve their hearing, which is a reason that most people would not argue with. Yet others have ear plastic surgery to improve their appearance. Some feel that the risks and costs involved with ear cosmetic surgery are not worth the benefit of an improved appearance.
If you are considering reconstructive ear surgery, there are a few things you should consider before going under the knife.

What is Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery is any surgery performed on the ear. Ear surgeries such as ear tube surgery, are used to improve the hearing of the patient. Other forms of ear surgery, such as ear lobe surgery, are used to improve the person's physical appearance. Most of the time, ear surgeries are outpatient procedures that do not require an extensive stay in the hospital. Extensive corrective surgery might be an in patient surgery.

Purpose of Ear Surgery

The most common reason that people have ear surgery is to improve their appearance. Otoplasty, for example, is a common type of cosmetic ear surgery used to pin back ears that protrude too far from the head. This condition causes ridicule and social stigma in the patients.

The other purpose of ear surgery is to improve hearing. Some types of ear deformities can restrict the hearing abilities of the patient. Sometimes, cosmetic ear surgery corrects both a visual problem and a hearing problem.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for cosmetic ear surgery is a person who has ears that are fully grown. Ideally, children should undergo the procedure, especially when it is to correct a severe deformity. This is because the sooner they undergo the procedure, the less pain and ridicule they will face as they head into adulthood. Children as young as five can undergo the procedure, and they will not have the psychological damage caused by years of teasing. Adults can undergo the surgery as well.
